Drive Axle "PowerDriveElect"

Transport concepts with drive axles over the course of time

History: Driven axles on trailers were helpful on underpowered tractors in the middle of the last century. These were capable of pulling heavy loads under difficult conditions.

However drive axles were only temporarily used and mostly when the drive wheels of a light tractor had insufficient power, which when combined with difficult operating conditions resulted in the entire vehicle getting stuck.

After more powerful tractors together with all wheel drive prevailed, the drive axle was soon to disappear from trailers. With the exception of some mountainous regions where they have survived.

The reason why PTO shafts and hydraulically powered drive axles could not prevail is obvious. They were not flexible and efficient enough to be used practically. For example the number of revolutions of the PTO shaft must be exactly adjusted to match the feed rate of the drive axle.

Present:

Elegant and flexible solutions such as drives with hydraulic motors, were only between 15 and 25 percent efficient. Even the hydraulic system “Load Sensing Power Beyond” with efficiencies of between 25 to 55 percent could not compete with the generator drive. The efficiencies of these are much higher, between 65 and 75 percent making it the transport concept of the future.

Future:

In particular the rising cost of energy now means that everything favors a transport concept with electric generators. In the future, there cannot be so many powerful and heavy tractors as there once was, transporting the same or even greater weight. What will be needed are lighter tractors with electric generators, connected via a standardized system to an electric motor and a drive shaft to the drive axle.

. . . Environment and economy:

The considerably higher energy efficiency of the electric drive and the improved traction due to the increase in possible loading of the electrically driven drive axle “Power Drive-Elect” for trailers saves fuel and with this energy. Farmers likewise find ecological uses and have economic benefits. In the future light weight tractors will also be able to pull heavy loads, as the electrically driven axle “Power DriveElect” assists the main drive. Tractors no longer have to be weighted down with front weights and axle weights.

With “Power DriveElect” Fleigl begins a new era of electrification. This forward-looking drive concept is not only suitable for axles. Different trailer attachments that are currently mechanically or hydraulically driven can and should be electrically powered. Modern electric motors have torque that is immediately available and are highly efficient.

The weight of the payload on the drive axle provides enough even traction for the entire vehicle combination. On the roads and above all under difficult conditions in fields, field tracks and during unloading in mobile silos, this helps optimize the transport work.
In the case of light weight tractors and trailers the ratio of payload to allowable total weight or payload to unladen or empty weight of the transport combination is improved. The energy requirement per tonne of cargo transported is also considerably reduced. Apart from this the drive axle “Power DriveElect” inevitably reduces the slippage of the tractors drive wheels, with the result: The ground is better protected and damaging tyre tracks are not as deep.

. . . Work management and safety:

Transport work can be carried out under difficult conditions for a longer time. And higher transport loads reduce the number of journeys necessary. This has a positive effect on working times and costs. With a specially integrated slip sensor, transport work can be even more efficient and the operation of the drive axle made even easier. Furthermore the electrically driven drive axle “Power DriveElect” significantly increases traction on slopes. Trailers do not slide about as much. Accident risks fall.
